Common JVC Faults & Fixes
Our technicians regularly resolve these JVC D-ILA-specific issues.
Gamma Droop — Milky Blacks
The most characteristic JVC fault. The image lacks "pop" and blacks look grey. Caused by degradation of the wire-grid polarisers in the optical block. We use industrial colorimeters to rewrite the internal gamma tables, restoring the deep blacks JVC is famous for.
Ballast Failure — The "Clicking" Sound
The projector tries to strike the lamp (audible as clicking), fails, then enters protective shutdown with red warning lights. Unlike general shops that swap boards, we repair the ballast at component level or replace with OEM-revision boards that have better heat tolerance.
Vertical Banding / Purple Lines
Single pixel-width vertical lines running the full screen height. Caused by poor connection on the D-ILA panel ribbon cable or the Formatter Board socket. We perform ribbon cable reseating or reflow. Rarely requires panel replacement.
Dust Blobs on Black Background
Soft, out-of-focus coloured circles (usually green) visible on a black field. Dust particles settled on the D-ILA panel face or the rear of the projection lens. Our clean-room environment allows us to strip the optical block, clean all surfaces, and realign convergence.
HDMI Sync Drops (4K HDR)
Projector loses signal intermittently, especially with 4K HDR content. Screen goes blue, then re-syncs. The HDMI equaliser chip on the input board is failing. We repair or replace the HDMI board and validate with full bandwidth test patterns.
Iris Mechanism Sticking
The dynamic iris stepper motor lubrication dries out, causing blades to stick. Results in grinding noise on startup or specific error code shutdown. We perform complete optical block service: dismantle the lens assembly, clean and relubricate the iris mechanism.
JVC Status Light Decoder
JVC projectors indicate faults via Warning, Lamp and Standby LED patterns. Use this table for first-line diagnosis.
| Warning | Lamp | Standby | Diagnosis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blink Red (1x) | Off | Solid Red | Fan failure or intake blockage. Check filters; if clean, internal fan has failed. |
| Blink Red (2x) | Off | Solid Red | Temperature sensor error or mainboard logic fault. |
| Blink Orange | Blink Orange | Solid Red | Lamp or ballast failure. Replace lamp first; if persists, ballast needs repair. |
| Blink Red (3x) | Off | Solid Red | D-ILA power voltage error. Serious mainboard or PSU fault. Requires lab diagnostics. |
| Solid Red | Solid Orange | Any | Circuit or system error. DD Board or Formatter board failure. |
Indicator patterns vary slightly between X-Series, N-Series and NZ-Series. The above covers the most common scenarios. Always disconnect power if the unit is overheating.
Is It Worth Repairing a JVC?
JVC projectors are premium assets. Repair is almost always the economically sound choice given their exceptional black-level performance.
Cost of Replacement
A new native 4K JVC (NZ7) costs £6,000 - £10,000. Replacing with a cheaper DLP model results in a massive downgrade in contrast and black levels.
Cost of Repair
Typical ballast repair or optical block service costs £250 - £550. This restores your premium cinema experience for less than 10% of replacement cost.
