Advanced Projector Maintenance & Diagnostics
A common misconception in the AV industry is that "laser means maintenance-free". While solid-state illumination eliminates routine lamp changes, the highly sensitive optical and thermal pathways within these units require rigorous, scheduled servicing to prevent catastrophic failure and irreversible contrast degradation.

The Anatomy of Laser & Optical Degradation
Projectors are high-volume air movers. To keep laser banks and digital micromirror devices (DMDs) from overheating, they ingest vast amounts of ambient air. Understanding how this process degrades image quality is the foundation of our maintenance methodology.
Phosphor Wheel & Stokes Shift Stress
In standard laser phosphor systems, intense blue laser arrays bombard a spinning phosphor wheel to generate yellow/green light. This physical reaction, known as the Stokes shift, generates immense concentrated heat.
If the internal cooling system begins to underperform due to dust accumulation, the phosphor binder effectively bakes. This leads to micro-cracking and delamination. The visual result on screen is a severe drop in luminance and an uncorrectable yellow or magenta colour cast. Regular thermal maintenance prevents this £1,500+ component failure.
Liquid Cooling & Cavitation (High-End RGB)
Native 4K and high-lumen RGB pure laser projectors (such as Barco Flagship and Christie models) utilise closed-loop active liquid cooling. Over tens of thousands of hours, the glycol-based coolant can break down, leading to sludge build-up or pump cavitation.
Our advanced PM (Preventative Maintenance) protocols include acoustic analysis of the pump block, flushing of the liquid lines, and radiator fin de-scaling to ensure the junction temperature of the diode banks remains within the manufacturer's strict operational envelope.
Engineered Support Across All Projector Classes
From the complex internal geometries of the Hisense LPU engine to the raw power of a Christie M-Series, our laboratories are equipped with the schematics and test rigs required for total system overhauls.
Internal Engine Technology
Advanced servicing of tightly integrated laser light processing units (LPU). We handle the delicate re-pasting of thermal compounds on integrated processing boards and realign dichroic splitters to restore sharp geometric focus.
Big Venue / High-End RGB
Heavy-chassis units used in simulation caves, auditoriums, and projection mapping. Maintenance involves rigorous filter replacement, chiller loop servicing, and spectroradiometric colour recalibration (Rec. 2020) to ensure fleet uniformity.
Conference & Installation
Models running 12-24 hours a day in boardrooms or higher education. We tackle excessive fan noise, clogged intake plenums, and degraded polarising filters that cause the image to look washed out or "grey".
Home Multimedia & Laser TV
Ultra-Short Throw (UST) systems pack immense heat into incredibly small spaces. We regularly service XPR pixel-shift actuators that have become noisy, and repair HDMI 2.1 boards damaged by voltage spikes or thermal stress.
The Deep Clean & Recalibration Process
A simple compressed-air blow-out pushes dust deeper into the optical block. Our servicing relies on clean-room teardowns, chemical cleansing, and precision measurement.
Optical Path Decontamination
Using manufacturer-approved optical solvents and non-abrasive techniques, we clean first-surface mirrors, DMD window glass, and integrator tunnels to recover lost ANSI lumens and restore deep black levels.
Thermal Interface Renewal
Thermal paste on processors and DMDs desiccates over time. We dismantle the heatsink assemblies, clean the hardened paste, and apply high-conductivity thermal compounds to prevent overheating and stuck pixels.
Fan & RPM Telemetry
We test individual fan RPM against intended motherboard telemetry. Failing bearings that cause high-pitched whining are identified, and fans are replaced with identical PWM profiles to ensure the firmware operates correctly.
Spectral Recalibration
Post-cleaning, we utilise Klein K-10A colourimeters to verify primary colour coordinates and EOTF gamma tracking. We ensure the projector leaves our bench matching its original factory specification.

error
Sony VPL: 3 Flashing Red LEDs (Lamp/Cover)
expand_more
The Diagnosis: The projector refuses to strike the light source and enters a protection state immediately or shortly after boot. While it suggests a cover issue, in aging units this usually indicates a thermal sensor tripping.
The Maintenance Resolution: We bypass the software lockout to test actual thermal dynamics, clear completely blocked thermal pathways, and replace fatigued thermistors or interlock micro-switches to restore safe boot sequences.
lens_blur
DLP & Laser TV: Persistent White Dots (Starfield Effect)
expand_more
The Diagnosis: Dead or stuck pixels appearing as bright white or black dots that multiply rapidly across the screen. This is a physical failure of the DMD (Digital Micromirror Device) chip, driven directly by poor heat dissipation.
The Maintenance Resolution: We perform a precision component-level replacement of the DMD chip and entirely rebuild the thermal linkage to the heatsink. This preventative step ensures the replacement chip does not suffer the same fate.
palette
Laser Phosphor: Severe Yellow or Green Colour Shift
expand_more
The Diagnosis: The image loses its blue channel, resulting in a muddy, yellowish or green-tinted picture, alongside a massive drop in overall brightness.
The Maintenance Resolution: The blue laser diodes are failing, or the phosphor wheel binder has burnt out due to heat. We inspect diode banks with oscilloscopes, replace the damaged phosphor assembly, and recalibrate the white point to restore colour accuracy.
volume_up
UST Projectors: High-Pitched Whirring or Grinding Noise
expand_more
The Diagnosis: A loud mechanical noise that rises in pitch as the projector warms up, often accompanied by image blurring or an inability to focus sharply.
The Maintenance Resolution: This is typical of a failing XPR/e-shift 4K actuator vibrating out of tolerance, or a failing colour wheel bearing. We dismantle the optical block, replace the vibrating module, and re-balance the optical path for silent operation.
Free WEEE-Compliant Projector Recycling
If your equipment is deemed Beyond Economical Repair (BER) or has reached the end of its operational lifecycle, we offer a completely free, environmentally responsible disposal service.
Zero-to-Landfill Commitment
Modern laser projectors contain hazardous materials alongside valuable rare-earth metals, complex optics, and heavy chassis metals. We ensure these components never reach a landfill.
- Component Harvesting: We carefully salvage viable optical blocks, lenses, and heatsinks to support the ongoing repair of legacy fleets.
- Safe Disposal: Toxic elements like phosphor binders and degraded liquid coolants are processed by certified environmental partners.
- Secure Data Wipe: For smart Laser TVs and enterprise projectors, we permanently wipe onboard storage to protect your network credentials and IP.
How Free Recycling Works
We make it seamless for facilities managers and AV integrators to retire old hardware responsibly without incurring unnecessary logistical costs.
1. Assessment & BER Notice
If repair costs exceed the projector's value, we issue a formal BER certificate.
2. Authorisation
You authorise us to recycle the unit instead of paying for return shipping.
3. WEEE Certification
We provide documentation proving compliant disposal for your asset registry.
