The cinema exhibition industry in the UK and Ireland has undergone significant transformation since the pandemic. As we move through 2025, several key trends are shaping the market: the continued transition from Xenon lamps to laser illumination, the growth of premium large format (PLF) screens, and increasing focus on operational efficiency. This article presents our annual analysis of the state of cinema exhibition across the region.

Screen Numbers and Market Structure

The UK maintains approximately 4,300 cinema screens across 790 sites, while Ireland has approximately 620 screens across 95 sites. The UK market is dominated by three major exhibitors: Odeon (AMC), Cineworld (now under new ownership), and Vue, which together operate roughly 65% of all screens. Independent and art house cinemas account for approximately 12% of screens but punch above their weight in cultural influence and awards season relevance.

Ireland's market is more concentrated, with the Irish Multiplex Cinemas (IMC) group and Odeon Ireland operating the majority of screens. The Light House Cinema in Dublin and the Irish Film Institute remain important cultural institutions that also serve as venues for international film festivals.

Laser Conversion Rates

The transition from Xenon lamp to laser illumination has accelerated significantly. As of mid-2025:

  • UK: Approximately 68% of commercial cinema screens have converted to laser illumination, up from 52% in 2023. Major chains have committed to completing conversion by 2027.
  • Ireland: Approximately 55% of screens have converted, reflecting the slightly slower capital investment cycle in the smaller market. Dublin and Cork lead conversion rates at 75%+.

However, the remaining 32% of UK Xenon screens face a growing challenge: lamp availability. Philips and Osram have reduced Xenon lamp production lines, and lead times for replacement lamps are now 8-12 weeks for some wattages. This supply constraint is pushing even reluctant exhibitors toward laser conversion.

Premium Large Format Growth

Premium Large Format (PLF) screens continue to grow as exhibitors compete with home streaming by offering an experience that cannot be replicated in a living room. The UK now has approximately 180 PLF screens, including IMAX (68 screens), ScreenX, 4DX, and proprietary formats such as Odeon Luxe and Everyman.

Ireland has 12 PLF screens, concentrated in Dublin. The Cineworld IMAX at the Dublin International Financial Services Centre remains the highest-grossing screen in the country on a per-seat basis.

PLF screens command ticket premiums of 40-100% over standard screens, making them disproportionately profitable. All new PLF installations in 2024-2025 have used RGB laser illumination, reflecting the brightness and colour gamut requirements of premium presentation.

Maintenance Spending Trends

As the installed base of laser projectors grows, maintenance spending patterns are shifting:

  • Reduced consumables spending: Lamp purchases have declined by 45% year-on-year as laser penetration increases. Filter replacements and cleaning supplies now represent a larger share of consumables budgets.
  • Increased service contract spending: Laser projectors require different expertise than lamp-based systems. Exhibitors are increasingly outsourcing maintenance to specialist service providers rather than training in-house staff.
  • Capital reserve building: Forward-thinking exhibitors are establishing reserves for laser module replacement, typically budgeting £15,000-£30,000 per screen for a mid-life overhaul at 20,000-25,000 hours.

Operational Challenges

Despite the overall positive trajectory, exhibitors face several operational challenges:

  • Skilled technician shortage: The transition from lamp to laser has created a skills gap. Technicians trained on Xenon systems need retraining on laser safety, optical alignment, and digital diagnostics. The UK has approximately 120 qualified cinema projector technicians, with an estimated need for 180+.
  • Supply chain constraints: Post-pandemic supply chain issues continue to affect projector lead times. New projector orders now typically have 12-16 week delivery times, compared to 6-8 weeks pre-2020.
  • Energy costs: Despite laser projectors being more efficient, overall cinema energy costs have risen 35% since 2021 due to wholesale electricity price increases. This makes efficiency improvements even more valuable.

Looking Forward

The UK and Irish cinema markets are well-positioned for continued recovery and growth. Box office revenues in 2024 reached 85% of pre-pandemic levels, with 2025 tracking toward 90%. The combination of compelling theatrical releases (particularly franchise films and event cinema) and the premium experience offered by PLF screens is bringing audiences back to cinemas.

For exhibitors, the priority is clear: complete the laser conversion, invest in PLF where market conditions support it, and establish robust maintenance partnerships that can support the new generation of laser projection technology. The exhibitors who act decisively on these priorities will be best positioned for the next decade of cinema exhibition.
